How this converter works

Step 1 — Convert to annual

Every conversion passes through the annual figure first. Multiply your entered amount by the number of pay periods per year for your selected frequency:

  • Weekly: amount × 52
  • Biweekly: amount × 26
  • Semi-monthly: amount × 24
  • Monthly: amount × 12

Step 2 — Divide to each target frequency

The annual total is then divided by each frequency's periods per year using the same divisors. The calculator uses exact arithmetic — annual ÷ 26 for biweekly, annual ÷ 24 for semi-monthly — with no rounding applied to the intermediate figures.

Why biweekly and semi-monthly are different

Biweekly (every two weeks) produces 26 paychecks per year. Twice a year, biweekly employees receive three paychecks in one calendar month. Semi-monthly (twice a month — typically the 1st and 15th) produces exactly 24 paychecks per year. The annual salary is identical; the per-paycheck amount differs only because the year is divided into a different number of periods.

Source: Standard payroll arithmetic — pay period count definitions per DOL Fair Labor Standards Act. The formulas (annual ÷ 26, ÷ 24, ÷ 52, ÷ 12) are also stated explicitly in IRS Publication 15-T (Withholding Methods) as the basis for annualizing wages.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between biweekly and semi-monthly pay?

Biweekly pay means you receive a paycheck every two weeks — 26 paychecks per year. Semi-monthly pay means twice per month (for example, the 1st and 15th) — exactly 24 paychecks per year. The per-paycheck amount differs even for the same annual salary.

Why does annual ÷ 26 not equal my monthly salary × 2?

Because 26 biweekly periods don't divide evenly across 12 months. In two months per year, biweekly employees receive three paychecks. Annual ÷ 26 is the correct per-paycheck amount for a biweekly schedule — not monthly salary divided by 2.

How many paychecks will I receive this year?

Your total depends on pay frequency: weekly = 52, biweekly = 26, semi-monthly = 24, monthly = 12. Biweekly employees also have two months each year where three paydays fall within the same calendar month.

How do I convert my salary to an hourly rate?

Divide your annual salary by 2,080 — that is 52 weeks multiplied by 40 hours per week. For example, a $52,000 annual salary equals exactly $25.00 per hour, assuming a standard 40-hour work week with no overtime.
